TABI Conference Speaker Profiles: Cilla Conway
Which card would you choose to describe yourself, and why? (If it is deck-specific, which deck would it be from?)
Either the Queen of Wands from my first deck, The Intuitive Tarot. or the High Priestess from my new deck, The Shimmering Veil Tarot.
When, how, and why did you start to use the tarot?
I began to use the tarot in 1973 – I bought a horrible deck, the Swiss IJ, which I couldn’t use. I then found the Aquarian, which taught me how to read intuitively, but at the same time I began to paint my own.
Please give a short bio of yourself. You could include family, hobbies, work, pets, achievements, favourite food/movie/music, tarot…whatever you think is good to know about you!
I was born in Holland, brought up in Zimbabwe, and moved to London in 1971. For a long time I was an office worker, which I thoroughly disliked – but always painted in the evening, and read tarot for friends and work colleagues. In 2002 I finished a degree in art, left office work (yay), my tarot deck was accepted for publication, and I began painting the Devas of Creation. On the strength of those decks I started to read tarot at Watkins Bookshop. In 2016 I moved to Italy and now live in the most idyllic place in the mountains, painting tarot and oracle decks, and living a life I would never have dreamed of, all those years back in London.
All told, I now have produced four tarot decks and three oracles. Four of these are already published, and I’m gradually sending off all the rest to the printers.

Please give a short summary of what you are going to speak about at TABI’s Online Conference!
My new tarot, The Old Gods, is the inspiration. Each card will depict various gods – so, for instance, the Empress illustrates one of the most ancient goddess sculpture from about 12000 BC; and also shows Isis; Mary; Demeter and Persephone. The talk will tie the images and the gods in with current world happenings – like Shiva the destroyer dancing on outdated ideas about race, and The Magician as healer working to save people from the virus… (these were Katalin’s suggestions!, which I think are great).
