The Symbolism of the Tarot as it was Created with Robert M. Place
April 10 @ 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm
The Tarot was created by artists in the early 1400s in Northern Italy when as enigmatic fifth suit, called Trumps, was added to the four-suit decks that already existed. This combined deck came to be known as the Tarot. All of the images in the Tarot can be compared in other works of art from that same time and place, and this comparison gives us the best window into the meaning of the cards. In this lecture will focus on the symbolism of the trumps as the Renaissance artist who created them would have viewed them and we will glimpse the mystical philosophy that they teach, a Neoplatonic philosophy that unlike the cards does stem from ancient Egypt.
