Most of you may have heard of shadow and light as part of our own inner psyche. What draws me to this deck is how Toni Savory gives us a chance to explore that “you are not just one self but a symphony of four: The Physical Self, The Conscious Self, The Subconscious Self and The Superconscious Self.” As well as having an enlightening perspective, the cards are absolutely beautiful, even the shadow cards! Let me share with you an experience that has left me feeling deeply connected to a part of me that has been given permission to become awake.
What you receive:
A super sturdy two part box. Thirty-six cards that are smaller than a standard oracle; they measure just over 11cm by 7.5 cm which is similar to a regular playing card size but still big enough to see all the details. It has small gold glyphs in the corners of each card. The backs of the cards have a deep blue speckled back with a gold frame and a diamond composed of four small gold diamonds. The guidebook is glossy and full colour at 142 pages long.
Who is this deck aimed for?
This deck is for anyone who wants to explore “pathways to integrating shadow and light”, while “navigating the multilayered landscape of your inner world”; anyone who is on the journey to find out why parts of the inner self have become blocked and how to embrace all the four selves. As Toni says “to be the best person we can be”. This can be through a daily practice of drawing a card to a complete 36 card tableau that can be worked on as long as you need.
How is the deck arranged?
There are:
2 Significators
15 Light cards
15 Shadow cards
Counterparts – each card has a counterpart in the self or shadow self (you will need the guide book to find out which cards are paired together).
Neutral Cards – 4 individual cards that are not linked to the other cards.
Each card has 8 parts which include keywords, a mantra, a core meaning and a conscious/subconscious aspect.

I love creating a mantra by combining two cards. It is a great way to get your mind thinking and the possibilities are endless! It can take as little as a few moments while having your morning beverage or during a lunch break. The Trigger Release spread is quite a deep journey so allow yourself some ‘you-time’ to take in the card positions and the meanings that come up. That is the beauty of this oracle deck, you can be in control of how much time you want to get to know the messages, and how to live your balanced best life. **Remember we are human and this might make you feel emotions that you weren’t expecting**
Favourite cards:
Would you believe me if I said that my two favourite cards are Counterparts of each other? Just based on the pictures and titles they stuck out for me, although there are many others I loved too. I also love card 22 Identity, a light card, and 24 Hoax a shadow card.
The Mantras for these two cards are “I am proud of who I am” & “I am not the constructs placed upon me”. It has taken me a long time to believe in myself but I still try to find where I fit in in life, I am sure I am not alone in saying that.

31 Roots, card type – light
Keywords: depth, heritage, ancestry, learned behaviour
Mantra: The depths of my roots brings awareness to my experiences
Core meaning: (in essence) consider your own spiritual roots, not just those of your ancestors but this throughout all the lifetimes you have experienced up to this point.
Conscious: You are enhancing your connection to your roots, bringing to it the knowledge of where you have come from while remaining open to ancestral knowledge.
Subconscious: You have the ability to draw upon all the spirits who came before you in your lineage and embrace the oneness that is experienced through that.
Would I recommend this deck?
Definitely! I have really loved the experience of working with these cards. From pulling a card every couple of days during summer and also working with a different spread each week. I did a previous review of another Red Wheel Weiser publication, Memento Mori. They pair beautifully together. I wish for anyone who discovers Four Selves Oracle an incredible journey of discovery.
