I jumped at the chance to review this vibrant oracle deck ‘The Venice Witch Oracle’ by Lili Nguyen and Lucie Corbasson. Its eye-catching colours instantly caught my eye.
This exuberant and psychedelic oracle deck was originally published in French under the name ‘The Venice Witch’ in September 2021. It was then republished in several different languages by Rockpool Publishing in early 2025. To date, Lili Nguyen has only created this oracle deck, which when republished by Rockpool was renamed ‘The Venice Witch Oracle’.
The deck’s creator, Nguyen, has quite a private presence on social media. There are references of her being from France, and possibly residing in LA, that she is a multifaceted spiritual creator, mother, nail artist, singer and clothing designer. However, I could not find any solid evidence of this, so I found out quite little about her.
Lucie Corbasson is a French freelance illustrator based in Lille, France. She is the talented artist behind this energetic and spirited deck, described as obtaining her inspiration for her artwork from memories and real-life moments. However, she also remains just as private.
The deck itself is described as “a compassionate oracle” that will assist you in finding your own spiritual intuition, and empowers you to push forward with the insight for self-reflection, encompassing everyday life as it comes, and the challenges the universe can spin your way.
Let’s get in the box…
The 33-card deck is accompanied by an 80-page booklet, in a solid and sturdy two piece box that is typical of Rockpool. Within the guidebook you will find a brief introduction about the deck from the creator, a quick how-to on using the cards, two spreads that you can use with the cards to assist you on your spiritual journey, and then the simple yet direct messages linked to each card. It also includes a brief introduction to the creator and the artist in the back.
Although some may think the guidebook is a little lacking and could have done with more information, I found this was my favourite thing about it: simple, quick, easy to read, resonate with, and straight to the point… Love it!
I did notice, however, that the artist’s name is not on the front of either the guidebook or the box. This initially led me to think that Lili had done the artwork too. It was only when I read the guidebook did I discover this wasn’t the case, and so felt that both creator and illustrator should have been credited equally.
The cards are embossed on the edges with a stunning metallic patterned gilt, they are so glossy that they slide easily when shuffling.
The artwork…
The vivid psychedelic themed digital artwork is definitely quite striking. The images are well balanced in colour tones and values to make them pop with different things. Each time, you may notice something you never saw before because of the multi-layered concept of each card.
The artwork and the deck is inclusive, with symbolism encompassing masculine and feminine energies through the bold and simple designs, and within which the creators include simple yet inspirational messages.
There are three cards that resonate and really stick out to me in this deck, and these are:
- Intuition (4), The guiding light and the all seeing eye just pop out, the empowering message to trust yourself and listen to your intuition.
- Abundance (8), the beauty of the flowers and fruit that make life so sweet, bringing abundance and prosperity with its effortlessly simple representation, very much like the 10 of pentacles.
- Happiness (26), With its multiple faces that call out to me to look behind the smile, take off the mask, and see deeper. I was drawn in, and it brought to mind images of Hindu mythology, the multiple arms of Durga and the seven faces of Shiva. The guidebook however conveyed a different message – one of evolution, expectation, and what we as humans define as happiness.
This deck has been a very insightful deck to use as part of my personal reflective practice, and I will no doubt use it regularly for myself.
For my followers on social media, I used it as part of my ‘Seeker Sunday’, where I use a new deck that I have or am reviewing to offer my followers a free card pick, in return, I ask follow up questions regarding what drew them to that card and whether the card’s meaning resonated, etc. Many were drawn to the vivid design on the back of the cards when scrolling, which made them stop and view. They also felt the message held some significance.
