I’ve always been a firm believer in synchronicity and once again, find this to be true. Experiencing a bout of tarot apathy, I found my interest in the cards, as well as my connection, waning. I figured it was just a phase, but I wasn’t doing anything about it.
Then this book crossed my desk.
It’s a title I never would have chosen on my own because I mostly read tarot for others and not for myself. This was about to change, and it was exactly the change I needed beginning with my approach.
I believed it could help. I left my preconceived notions at the door, and committed to the concept, the methods, and the approach.
The first few chapters focus on the mechanics of regular tarot practice. In A Practice of One’s Own, and From Readings to Ritual you create a daily ritual based around your reading style that is both simple and necessary. The next chapter, The Magic of Journaling addressed my overlooked appreciation for journaling (it was comforting to read Mary K. Greer’s admission about her journaling practice in the forward). Pointers on Practice helpful for both beginners and as a refresher for experienced readers as I approached this with both a beginner’s mind and a few decades of reading tarot under my belt.
Once the initial concepts begin to take hold, it’s time to go deeper. Rooting Into Your Practice, Bloom Where Your Planted, Slow Growing, Walking Your Path, Whole Self-Care, Ebb and Flow, and Igniting The Fire solidify the methods and form the framework for making these rituals your own, nurturing who you are as a tarot reader, and in turn, elevating your practice in order to help others discover their insight and messages in your cards.

The chapters in the final third of the book address the external influences that flow through us when we connect with tarot. Conversing With Guides, The Blank Spaces, and Light in the Shadow offer connection with the intangible knowledge of tarot, and its source. Sitting in Spirit and Accessing the Inner Temple focus on the deeply spiritual practices associated with reading tarot, while Cosmic Awareness and Manifesting With The Moon serve as a reminder that we are an integral part of the cycle of the universe around us. Ghost Stories and Shenanigans contain unique (and fun!) spreads designed to unlock your imagination and expand your possibilities by removing perceived constraints.
The Tarot of You is an enjoyable experience overall. The exercises are effective and accessible, no matter what your experience reading tarot is. However, it assumes a basic understanding of the RWS tarot system and contains no individual card explanations or keywords. This isn’t a ‘how to’ manual, it’s a tool for transformation, or in my case, a much-needed reboot to my connection with my cards. I found the exercises, and Dawn Michelle’s insightful coaching, to be most helpful in quieting my overstimulated tarot-brain from the myriad external influences (noise), influencers (noisemakers) in the oversaturated tarot-sphere.
I’ve only had the book for a couple of weeks and wanted to share my initial thoughts as it will be available for purchase soon, but this review doesn’t do it justice because while I’ve read it, I’m still experiencing it. The process of creating (or recreating in my case) a deep and meaningful connection with tarot can’t be rushed. This book won’t be shelved for a long while. It will live on my desk, next to my bedtime journal (which didn’t exist until recently), and in my bag when I’m out and about. It’s a commitment I’m excited to embrace and I’ll provide a follow up in the coming months.
To be continued…
