The theme of this calendar is…Unicorns (you guessed right!). When I think of unicorns, I am reminded of a passage from Alice Through the Looking Glass:
The Lion and the Unicorn were fighting for the crown:
The Lion beat the Unicorn all round the town.
Some gave them white bread, some gave them brown;
Some gave them plum-cake and drummed them out of town.
This story links to the symbolism of the Royal Coat of Arms of the UK where the Lion represents England and the Unicorn represents Scotland. I always associated unicorns with British folklore, however, referring to my good old copy of J. C. Cooper’s An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Traditional Symbols, it is, in fact, a common mythic creature in many cultures. Two unicorns often flank the Kabalistic Tree of Life as guardians. In Taoist culture it can embody ‘ky-lin’ or what I understand to mean the union of yin and yang energies. In Christianity, the Unicorn is sometimes a symbol for Christ or the purity of the Virgin Mary, while in Greco-Roman and Sumer-Semitic cultures it represents the moon, femininity and divinities like Artemis or Diana.
Priestess Moon is the artist and author of the 2027 Be Your Own Enchanted Unicorn Calendar, which uses artwork from the oracle deck of the same name – which I am eager to own! Based in Western Australia, she studied for a Bachelor of Design and has produced a number of books and decks, including the 2025 TABI CARTA Award Runner up Deadly Apothecary Oracle Deck. Brought up in an atheist household, she actually turned to Christianity in her teens. Then, in her twenties, she went to Scotland, changed her focus to witchcraft as she ‘wanted to express [her] spirituality through a connection with nature’, and has practiced as a witch ever since.

Drawings for The Enchanted Unicorn Oracle Deck and 2027 calendar are inspired by the obscure Voynich Cypher Manuscript c. 1401-1599. Held by the Yale University Library (a link to the full digitised manuscript is above), it is written in an unknown language, and its origin has mystified scholars for decades. It contains paintings of unidentified plants, recipes, astrological symbols, mythical creatures, and was written on the equivalent of fourteen cow skins.

Priestess Moon has emulated the naive and lively illustrative style of the manuscript in her vibrant Unicorn characters drawn in pen throughout the calendar. Each month she has designed a unique sigil you can use in your magick rituals and included a plant that you can use for uplifting your mood or home remedies. A banner at the top of the month offers a motto and the section titled ‘Unicorn Inspiration’ includes words of wisdom to keep you motivated, drawing on the energy of the uniquely designed unicorn for that month. The date page below includes the usual holidays for the Southern Hemisphere and key moon phases. The front page also includes a lined page where you can write your intentions for the year.

I was thrilled to receive this calendar for review. I saw the ad for it on the Rockpool page and was immediately drawn in by the colourful eccentricity of it and the extremely positive messaging. The artwork is whimsical – as it should be – given that it abounds with half plant, half animal characterful unicorns that the artist obviously had a lot of fun creating. A bonus with this calendar is a full page of stickers featuring the unicorns and sigils which you could use in your journal.
At first glance, this calendar looks like it might be made just for children, and it would certainly be suited to young people. But it is made for anyone who is a big kid at heart and who would love a bit of mystery, magic and myth to influence their every day in 2027.
