Book Review: Seasons of the Witch Mabon Journal

Seasons of the Witch: Mabon Journal uses the artwork and themes of the Seasons of the Witch: Mabon Oracle deck, which focuses on Autumnal artwork and messages. The journal can be used as a stand alone item for writing your reflections or to record readings you do with the matching oracle deck. This iteration of the well loved oracle series focuses on Mabon, the Pagan Autumn Equinox that is part of the Wheel of the Year.

The book is 179.0 × 18 × 230.0 mm and populated with a mixture of full page and cameo illustrations in full colour. Borders are coloured and there are lined pages for writing. It is a guided journal with 50 prompts and full page illustrations to inspire you. The page “Pumpkin Spice and Apple Cider” has a wonderfully cosy illustration of a kitchen witch drinking cider, her black cat familiar at her feet as she stares out the window at the falling leaves. The prompt asks you to make a list of things you would love to do but keep putting off, and to see if you can find a pattern between them. What would you love to do again? “Grieving” is represented by a very emotive illustration of a skeleton with long hair and a living face that is screaming. The journal prompt asks you to write about what you are grieving right now.

All the illustrations are magical, strongly evoking the feeling of autumn, with falling leaves, and characters contemplating grey days while huddled and cosy indoors. The titles and questions on the journal pages also mirror the feeling of the season – Autumn is a good time to consider what we need to let die and fall away, and where we can energetically clear space for new things to grow.

This journal is for anyone who needs a little inspiration to process their thoughts and feelings in an encouraging and structured way. It is especially good for people who follow rituals around changes in the seasons or the Wheel of the Year, and who follow nature based witchcraft. And of course for any collectors of the Seasons of the Witch series of decks.

You don’t need to be a tarot/oracle reader or witch to enjoy using this journal as it has beautiful illustrations and thoughtful questions to ease you through the cold Autumn. I would specifically use this deck for that season to make the most of the theme, and would be less inclined to use it for just regular journaling or tarot notes because it has tailored questions.
