Enter…Moonlight
By Guest Contributor: Mary du Plessis
Have you heard of Moonlight? If you haven’t, you soon will. Moonlight is a new platform, developed by tarot enthusiasts Danielle Baskin and Caroline Hermans, for tarot enthusiasts. It’s been called Zoom for tarot, only better because tarot is the star of the show.
The Moonlight website offers several features, including a blog, the option to book a reading with one of their vetted tarot professionals, a shop where you can choose additional decks for use on the Moonlight platform, and… this is the best part… your very own ‘tarot room’.
The Moonlight tarot room is where the magic happens. The base option is entirely free, and comes with two decks, Rider Waite Smith and Nicholas Conver Marseille. From the home page, you start a room (also called starting a ritual) and shuffle the deck. The guide on the left (which you can turn off) will lead you through a tarot ritual and offer keywords for the cards you draw.
You can select one of several position readings, including the Celtic Cross, or choose the blank spread to accommodate your own favorites. From there you can move the cards around, adjust the size, change the background, make notes, and save your readings. This is an excellent way to continue a personal tarot journey and deepen your study of the cards.
Up to six people can occupy a tarot room, again all for free, making Moonlight perfect for a fun virtual get together with your friends, hosting a workshop or class, or paid readings with your clients (billing and payment would be via your usual methods, of course).
I’ve tested my own Moonlight room with several friends, including fellow TABI members Linda Sever (host of the monthly ‘Let’s Talk Tarot’ member’s meetup) and our Chair, Janine Worthington. The level of excitement when each one first signed on, having no idea what to expect, mirrored and reinforced my own. They began shuffling, turning cards, adjusting the backgrounds and exploring the room and deck shop (a favourite, of course!), immediately delighted and captivated by the vibrant graphics and smooth flow of the process itself.
An optional paid “Plus” account comes with a nominal fee of $9 per month and expands the free features, such as more backgrounds, the capability to search and filter the cards, and add spreads. For $12 per year you can add virtual decks, originally hand drawn by select artists. The indie decks are unique, beautiful, help support local artists, and bring their own insight to your tarot room and rituals.
I wholeheartedly encourage you to give Moonlight a try. Set up your free room, invite some friends, start a ritual, and see where it takes you. Their motto is: “A New Place for Tarot”, and it certainly is. This is the 21st Century and I’m here for it. See what you think. And don’t miss the upcoming TABI InstaLive, on Thursday 16th May, at 7pm BST. TABI Chair, Janine Worthington will be chatting with Danielle Baskin about the world of Moonlight, and tarot in this brand new concept. You can catch the interview on the TABI Instagram page @tabitarot and the replay on either Instagram or YouTube.
