The Lost Book of Spells is a beautifully bound book published by Rockpool Publishing Australia in March 2025. The author, Fiona Horne, is a well-respected witchcraft practitioner, who has written 15 bestselling books and several oracle decks, all of which have had a tremendous impact on modern witchcraft, aiming to dispel the stigma modern witches face today, just like our ancestors.
The Lost Book of Spells has an ancient, old time feel to it with its off-white and stunning red gilded pages, and faux-leather bound cover. Encompassing the theme of magic and alchemy through its Victorian, gothic aesthetic and artwork, it reminds me of a book you would find in the dark, dusty book stalls in the library at Sunnydale High (for all you Buffy fans out there). I was instantly drawn to it by its cover, and was not disappointed by its content.
Full of over 150 magickal spells, covering an array of day-to-day challenges and encounters, and beautiful illustrations throughout, Fiona guides you through working with the cycles of the Moon, and the power of the sun, all with the natural world at your fingertips. Daily rituals such as ‘witchy yoga of the breath’, Colour Meditation and Tarot Reading are introduced with the basics of safe practice, using ethically sourced supplies, and a glossary of ingredients and references. The compilation also covers health and mental well-being, sleep, love, sex, and relationships, to work, study, and even social media.
I was so enthralled reading this, that I tried a number of the meditations and breath-work exercises for myself. I also followed a number of other daily mindful practices that Horne recommends, and so far have found them beneficial in my journey to find more balance and self-love.
My only criticism of the book is that there are a large number of ingredients needed that are only available online due to a lack of local suppliers. This can impact time and cost, and consideration then needs to be taken on how economically friendly obtaining these supplies will be.
Overall, it is a beautiful book; full of valuable and treasured information that has possibly been lost through the ages, compiled by Horne to resurrect the ancient practices, and awaken the modern witches of today to own their power, and manifest their best lives on all levels.
